JASPER TAN
Trombone
Singaporean bass trombonist Jasper Tan began playing the trombone at the age of nine in his primary school brass band and has went on to appear with professional orchestras such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Jenaer Philharmonie and the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, among others. Back home, he performs regularly with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and is bass trombonist of the Lion City Brass Band. His varied performance experience includes chamber music on both modern and historical trombone, full length opera and ballet productions and live film concerts. He can also be heard on the latest CD of the Stuttgarter Posaunen Consort, “Seicento”, featuring music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods played on sackbuts.
Equally comfortable in the spotlight, Jasper won First Prize at the Singapore Low Brass Festival Solo Competition 2016 and has performed as a soloist with the Voith Orchester, the Stuttgarter Ärzteorchester, the Lion City Brass Band, the NAFA Wind Orchestra and the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra 2013 and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, an orchestra consisting of the best students from German-speaking conservatoires. With these orchestras, he has toured Asia, Europe and South America, performing in venues such as the Berliner Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Musikverein Vienna, Tokyo Opera City, the National Concert Hall Taipei, the Sala São Paulo and the Teatro del Lago Frutillar.
Jasper began his formal music studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts under Damian Patti and Fredi Sonderegger of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. He holds a BMus degree from the Royal College of Music London where he studied under Dave Stewart and recently completed his MMus degree in Germany at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart in the class of Prof. Henning Wiegräbe, with further instruction from Frank Szathmáry-Filipitsch and Harald Matjaschitz of the SWR Symphonieorchester. Jasper in turn has coached low brass players in school bands from primary to tertiary levels and served as trombone tutor at Raffles Girls School and the WBAS Youth Band Festival 2016.
